From OS 9.x to startup in OS X
1. From Apple Menu select Control Panels
2. From Control Panels Select Startup Disk
3. Click on the triangle next to Macintosh HD (or the name of your hard drive)
4. When the triangle points down, select the system to the left of version Mac OS X 10.x.x
5. Then click the Restart button
From OS X to startup in OS 9.x
1. From Apple Menu or the Dock, select System Preferences
2. Click Startup Disk
3. Select Mac OS 9.x
4. Restart the computer

Shutdown |
Eject key (the upper-right key on the keypad normally used to eject disks from the optical drive)
Press Control-Eject
Shutdown dialog appears.
When the dialog appears:
Type R(estart), S(leep), or C(ancel)

The Dock is like the Control Strip.
To make adjustments to the dock, select System Preferences from the Dock.
Click on Dock.
Or from the Apple menu select Dock
1. Dock Size: Change Dock Size
2. Magnification: Icons on the Dock will increase in size as the mouse moves over the icon.
If the check box to the left of Magnification is empty, there will be no magnification. If there is a check
mark in the box, then there will be magnification. To turn Magnification on or off, click the check box.
3. To hide or show the Dock, click the check box to the left of "Automatically hide and show the Dock"
4. Position on screen: (10.1.x) Select radio button for Left, Bottom or Right. Right and Left Docks are vertical. Bottom Dock is horizontal
5. Minimize using: Genie Effect (animation) or Scale Effect. When you minimize a window, you put it in the Dock. To minimize click the yellow or middle button in the top left corner of the window.
6. Animate opening applications: If the check box to the left of "Animate opening applications" is checked, then the when you click on an icon on the Dock, it will bounce up and down while the application is opening.
7. To add an application icon to the dock, drag the item to the Dock from a Finder window.
8. To remove an icon from the Dock, drag it out of the Dock.

1. Computer should be turned off
2. Hold down the Command (Apple) and the S Keys at startup
To see a complete list of all the system activity that happens before OS X starts
